Home decor – small first step

New Years always makes me so motivated to work on my resolutions, but then it doesn’t last throughout the year XD;; I’ve been alternating working out and studying Japanese, so that I don’t have to make time for both after work. It’s been working well so far!

I’m also working on our home decor finally. I’ve learned from my past experiences. When I got motivated about it before, I tried to do too much at once, and then just gave up. Now I’m doing small goals each week, which also includes giving my husband a small weekly assignment, haha.

Last week, I told him to put up a single wall shelf. Of course, he procrastinated until Sunday, but at least it’s up now.

It’s in our half bathroom downstairs, which is basically the bathroom that friends use when they’re over. Because of that, I wanted to at least do a little bit with it. I was always annoyed with how there’s no cabinets, shelves, or counter space in there. Now there’s a shelf at least!

The shelf is from IKEA and then I bought a couple baskets from Target. The small one just holds a spare hand soap and air freshener. The large one is for extra toilet paper. I wanted to hide the air freshener in a pretty candle holder, but it’s too tall for all the ones I found =/ I guess I’ll keep searching.

The flowers are fake ones that I put together with materials from Jo-ann. I mixed 2 flower bundles and cut them down to have shorter stems. That was harder than I thought! I thought they were just plastic stems, but I actually had to use wire cutters because they had metal wires inside.

The prints are by Jessica Grundy and Ashley Goldberg. I bought the former from an Anime con and the latter from Shana Logic.

And that’s it! My next targets are the guest room and family room. Our “assignment” this week is to go to a couple furniture stores to look for a new couch 🙂 I will share more as I go!

Our flat is really plain at the moment. I was meant to spend last year putting in some home decor, but never got round to this.

I love the basket you use for the toilet rolls! Great idea and great place to put it.

Time to shop for some paintings and little things we can pop around the flat.

I love the flower arrangements you made! A shelf in the powder room is a great idea, I will definitely add that to my home decor to-do list this year 🙂

Aw! I wish I could do more home decorating! I always see these cute ideas on Pinterest that I want to do but it seems silly to do it in my apartment when I’m only going to be there for a few more months.

The bathroom looks really nice! The little touches really help. I love the picture with the little girl and the bear – so adorable!

I really like how your bathroom looks! I’ve been trying to decorate my place for the past year and a half and it’s finally getting somewhere. Like you, I try to do too much at once and get overwhelmed so I end up doing very little.

I can’t wait to see the rest of your projects!

I like your decor! They are nice and cosy, and I like how your prints are from Anime cons, which shows your support to them. 😀 Though I’d never would have considered putting them in the bathroom XD

    I missed you!!

I’ve been in home decor/reorganize too! I have yet to put up anything but I have been shuffling things around so that everything is in its convenient place. I know that we are planning to put a shelf up soon in the kitchen and I can’t wait because it will make things just so much easier since I don’t have a pantry.

I really like those prints! I’m trying to find more pictures to put up too but I’m having trouble deciding between drawings/prints or personal photographs.

    • Cat says:

I think you should do both prints and personal photos! Though our bathroom only has prints, I have personal photos up in other areas of the house 😀

  • Joy says:

The smallest things make the difference, don’t they!

It looks really cozy and cute! I can’t wait to see what you do to the other rooms. I’m working on some home decor projects as well. So exciting!

  • Carolynne says:

That’s a great idea to do little projects every week. The shelf adds so much to the bathroom. Great job 😀

  • Nancy says:

I’m glad to hear that your New Year’s resolutions are heading to the right direction! Small steps make big differences~

Small goals are the way to go. I feel you about taking up something when you’re motivated. That’s how I am with my room. It’s either too messy or too neat ~___~.

You must have a big house :o! The little shelf you added on looks really neat. I also like how there are cute portraits there XD. I have some of those IKEA shelves installed in the kitchen at my house! That’s pretty cool XD. Have you shopped at Ross? They have some nice home stuff once in a while. You’re creative with those flowers too. You won’t need to replace them often or worry about them dying :)!

Good luck with your next redecoration~ 🙂

    • Cat says:

haha, our house is pretty big for two people actually XD;; I didn’t realize Ross had home decor stuff. I guess I always thought of them for clothing. I’ll have to check it out! Thanks!

My husband and I moved in together ten years ago and all of our furniture was given to us, nothing was anything we picked out on our own. Ten years later we still can’t afford new furniture and I haven’t a clue how to decorate as beautifully as you can in a way that I could afford.

  • Liv says:

It’s quite adorable the way you have decorated a guest bathroom. The little things like that make guests feel welcome and make inhabitants feel cozy. That’s something my house lacks.

I really like those prints! I wish I could find stuff like that to buy rather than the bad designs I usually see.

  • AnneMarie says:

I absolutely love the bathroom decor particularly the prints. I think the pop of color they give to the room is really nice. And I also like the basket that holds the toilet paper. The whole room just looks really cozy. (:

Can’t wait to see future decor implementations!

  • Amy says:

It’s so simple yet elegant and lovely! I really love the prints you have in the bathroom! I could stare at them all day hehehe.

  • Tess says:

Great start on your home decor!! I don’t think I would ever have the touch of elegance and simplicity as yours! I love the photo and the flower arrangements!

  • Jessica says:

I really like the touches you added! Even though it’s not much, it really does make a big improvement. I wish I can decorate my bathroom a bit, but it’s one of those rented “apartments” from the school where you can’t really do much. I don’t think I’m allowed to drill holes into the wall T^T But I do want to steal your basket and flower ideas 😉
