Beginner Cosplay Tips

With Halloween coming up next month, I thought this would be a good time to do an entry on beginner cosplay tips ๐Ÿ™‚ People often tell me that they’d love to cosplay but think they’d be bad at it. Well, that’s pretty much everyone starting a hobby for the first time, isn’t it? (Trust me, I didn’t know how to sew at first, and my first few costumes were pretty terrible.) You’ll never get anywhere in a hobby if you don’t try it!

If you are thinking of cosplaying, I really do recommend making your own costume, even if it’s not great at first. Here’s the benefits:

  1. It feels really good. It’s just an amazing feeling to finish a costume and then wear it. Also, when people compliment you, you know that they’re complimenting your work, not someone else’s.
  2. I frequently cosplay characters that aren’t well known, which means their outfits probably don’t show up in premade cosplay shops. I can choose what I cosplay without caring what’s in stores, and I save money because I don’t need to commission it.
  3. You learn many useful skills! I can alter and repair my clothing now!

Of course, there’s the cliche tips like, keep practicing! Start small! No one’s perfect at first, etc etc. Definitely those too, but let’s get into some cosplay-specific ones ๐Ÿ™‚

Look into premade patterns

There are many companies that make premade sewing patterns, and it’s less intimidating than trying to draft your own pattern. You probably won’t find one exactly like the outfit you want to do, but the key is to find one that is close enough and alter it from there.

I used a premade pattern for the following cosplays, and you can see that they don’t look exactly like the patterns I used. I had to alter all 3.

Chell’s didn’t need that much altering. I basically changed the fit to be a bit baggy and added stripes. I altered every piece of the pattern for Zia’s though (see this entry). Even after that, I still found the pattern worth it because it gave me a good starting point.

Japan trip, part 1: Fuji Q and Shibuya

My husband and I arrived in Tokyo, Japan on 10/28 in the evening and were just exhausted. It was a long flight and I barely slept, so we just checked into our hotel in Shinjuku, walked around a bit, ate dinner at an udon place, and then went to bed.

The next day (10/29), we woke up nice and early and headed to the Fuji Five Lakes area, which is about 2 hours away from Tokyo by bus or train. Most people come to this area to get a good view of Mt. Fuji. We were there for an amusement park called Fuji Q Highland ๐Ÿ™‚

The park is near the base of Mt. Fuji and actually had a great view of it. We saw Mt. Fuji clearly the entire time we were at the park. The best view wasย at the top of a roller coaster, where you could see it totally unobstructed… before being launched down a steep slope at fast speeds.

I thought it was a great idea that the park charges a low admission fee (1400 yen, ~$12) and then charges per ride. You could also get the “free pass” for 5200 yen (~$45) which lets you ride everything for free.ย It’s only worth it for roller coasters, so people who don’t like them can save money by paying for the smaller rides as they go.

How I decide on cosplays

Joy asked me how I determine which costumes to make. She read my mind! I actually drafted an entry about it just last month! I originally wrote this because I couldn’t decide on which costume to work on next, so I began thinking back on why I chose other costumes in the past.

1. I really like the game/show/movie/etc.
This is really the base reason for all of my cosplays. If I don’t like what the character is from, I don’t think it’s worth pursuing. This reason especially applies to my Chell (Portal) and Knives (Scott Pilgrim) costumes. Their designs aren’t necessarily interesting or hard to make, but I’m obsessed with Portal, and Scott Pilgrim vs The World is one of my favorite movies.

2. It would be a fun group cosplay.
I have a few solo cosplays, but I actually prefer cosplaying in a group if possible. It’s just fun to match with your friends ๐Ÿ™‚ Our soon-to-be Spirited Away costumes were decided when we tried to figure out what we can do together, and we realized we all like Ghibli films.
