A-kon 27 recap

I was at A-kon last weekend! It’s an Anime convention in Dallas, which is 3 hours away by car from Austin. I went with three of my coworkers, and it’s been a tiring and fun weekend.

This time around, I picked my Tashigi (One Piece) and Rhyme (TWEWY) cosplays to wear. Tashigi is my newest one, which I finished only a month ago. Though I was originally going to make another One Piece cosplay for A-kon, I ended up getting burnt out. I just couldn’t focus on another costume, so I brought my Rhyme cosplay instead.

In hindsight, I’m glad I didn’t do another One Piece cosplay because I got to spend more time as Tashigi. Here’s a recap of how my weekend was!

Cosplay lessons learned

You know the cosplay that I’ve been busy with for the past couple months? Well, it’s finished now!

Putting on a finished cosplay for the first time is one of the best feelings! I had a lot of fun with this one, partially because I love One Piece and partially because I learned so many new things on it.

In the past, I avoided prop work, so I have very little experience with it. Though I didn’t make the sword from scratch, I did so many alterations on it. I learned how to sand it smooth with Gesso, work with Worbla, and use sword wrap. All of the pink dots on the shirt were also painted by me, and this is the first time I’ve used fabric paint to make my own patterned fabric. (Full details on my cosplay blog.)

My Cosplay Process

This is kind of a follow-up to my Beginner Cosplay Tips entry from last year. Sometimes people tell me that they’d like to try making a costume but aren’t sure where to begin. Though each cosplay differs, I generally follow the same process for each one. Here’s how I go about my costumes!

Character research

I always start by researching the character’s outfit and by gathering as many references as I can, which are often screenshots and official art. In addition to just searching the internet, I’ll re-play games or re-watch shows/movies. When I can’t get good references, I have to make my best guess at certain parts I’m missing.

Sometimes I’ll also draw the outfit on paper with notes, just to make sure I have the right idea and don’t miss any important details.
