The Netflix… er I mean, Crunchyroll tag

I saw this over at Katy’s blog and decided to do this too! It’s originally a Netflix tag, but the past couple years, I’ve barely touched my Netflix account (yet I still pay for it… I should do something about that). Instead, I’ve been using Crunchyroll a lot, which is a streaming site for Anime.

I know not everyone watches Anime, and if you don’t, I recommend giving it a try! My husband wasn’t an Anime fan before, but because there’s such a large variety out there, I was able to find several series that he really liked. Now he watches some series with me πŸ™‚

All Time Favorite

anime_gurrenlagann

Gurren Lagann – Though it’s not my “all time” favorite, it’s up there on my favorites list and is available on Crunchyroll. It’s about a future where people are forced to live underground by the Spiral King, but some venture to the surface to fight him. (It’s more complicated than that, but saying any more would be spoilers.)

It starts out kind of light and funny, but it shifts to a more serious tone as it goes on. It’s also extremely over the top, where you pretty much have to turn off your brain and go along for the ride. You’re rewarded with some epic fights and good ol’ everyone-working-together feels.

Current Addiction

anime_onepiece

One Piece – We have been trying for the past year to catch up with this series. Not only is it long (currently at episode 696), but it’s still on-going! We’re at episode 587 right now, so we’re almost there… sort of… Anyway, I’m a big fan of shonen series (genre aimed at young males) like One Piece. It’s about Luffy who wants to become the King of Pirates, so he sets out at sea and gathers crew members along the way. It’s a really funny series with a bunch of action, and I love so many of the characters.

Wishlist

Crunchryoll is great about putting up new series, but I’d like to see more old ones! There were many Animes I missed when I was younger that I’d still like to see.

Pet Peeve

There are some hiccups here and there when it comes to streaming from a gaming console. We frequently stream from our PS3 or Wii U, and sometimes it’ll drop to lower quality and skip ahead a bit. Oddly enough, it’s solved by just rewinding a little.

Marathon Essentials

anime_husband_chi

I’m not the type to marathon things, though I like doing it for Anime series where the episodes are only 3 minutes long. That’s because you can finish so many episodes in a short amount of time! Two that I like are I Can’t Understand What My Husband Is Saying and Chi’s Sweet Home.

Both are really cute and funny. The former I’ve mentioned before, but it’s about a couple where the husband is an otaku (obsessed Anime fan) and the wife isn’t. The latter follows the life of a kitten who gets adopted by a caring family. (Crunchyroll only has Chi’s New Address, but it’s easy to figure out what’s going on without the first part.)

Sports Anime are ones that I tend to watch a lot of at once though. That’s because games last multiple episodes, and I really want to know the outcome XD;; I recently finished Haikyuu!! and will be moving onto Kuroko’s Basketball next!

What’s On Your Watch List

So many! I guess I can name the ones I plan on watching next. I already mentioned Kuroko’s Basketball, and I plan on watching Food Wars. I also recently started watching MY love STORY.

You Should Watch

anime_loghorizon

Log Horizon – Which is about people who wake up one day and find themselves living in the world of Elder Tale, a MMORPG that they all play. It’s different from Sword Art Online because they’re physically in the game’s world somehow (in SAO, their physical body is still in the real world). I actually prefer Log Horizon over SAO because it focuses more on the gaming aspects, and it’s also filled with strategy and politics.

anime_madoka

Puella Magi Madoka Magica – I normally don’t like magical girl series, but Madoka is different. All of those cute, happy images of it? LIES. ALL LIES. This series is really, really dark and took me by surprise. I liked the different spin on the magical girl concept, and the series actually has explanations for many things that go on.

anime_rinne

Rin-ne – Any old school Anime fans out there? Remember Rumiko Takahashi who did Ranma 1/2, Urusei Yatsura, and Inu Yasha? Well, her newest series is Rin-ne! It’s about Sakura, who can see spirits, and Rinne who is a shinigami. I’ve been following the manga and liking it a lot. While the Anime changes some things and is a bit out of order from the manga, it’s still enjoyable to watch.

There’s others I want to mention too, but I didn’t want this to be too long! I also liked the following and think they’re worth checking out: Attack on Titan, Free!, Magi, Hunter x Hunter, and Kill la Kill.

If you have an Anime recommend for me, I’d love to hear it!

I hope you enjoy Kuroko’s Basketball! It’s one of my favourites. The characters are all a lot of fun and the story is pretty nice. I wonder which characters you will like~

One Piece is really popular here but I’ve actually never watched it. I think I was put off because by the time I actually thought about watching there were so many episodes that it seemed a little too intimidating. Maybe I’ll pick it up some day. Might have to quit my job to find the time to do it, but oh well. XD

Thank you for the other suggestions too! … my to-watch list is growing.

Kill la Kill (which is the same people behind Gurren Lagann), Squid Girl, My Little Monster, and that’s all.

    • Cat says:

I mentioned Kill la Kill at the end of my entry πŸ™‚ I liked that one a lot, though I liked Gurren Lagann more. I’ll have to look into the other two!

My apologies. I also recommend Revolutionary Girl Utena which you can find on Hulu, which is just as mindfuckery like Madoka Magica. πŸ˜€

I haven’t watched anime in ages (other than Sailor Moon Crystal, haha), but Rin-ne immediately caught my eyes, I thought the drawing style looked familiar! I really loved Inuyasha, so I think I might give this one a try!

I havent been able to watch anime because of my little time but man do I miss it! I’ve seen One Piece (because who hasnt?) before but am not patient enough to follow every episode (so i admire you for braving the challenge!)

thanks for the recommendations, I hope i’ll be able to check them out so I can spazz with you~~

oohhh oohh, I really want to do this now. LOL I tried to watch Gurren Lagann, but never got very far with it. Maybe someday I will try again.

LOL your One Piece is like me on Bleach, though I gave up on that in the long run. I can’t even keep up with the manga anymore.

Kuroko no Basket is so addicting!! OMG I didn’t think I would really like it all that much. I just started it out of boredom and now I’m glad they have three seasons. lol

Oh my gosh I didn’t even know this service existed! I’ve browsing through everything now. I can’t get CardCaptors (a guilty pleasure!) in my region, which was a huge disappointment!
I’ve only read one One Piece manga strip, and that was years ago but I did enjoy it! Puella Magi Madoka Magica sounds really good – I hope I can get that in my region!

  • Tara says:

*sighs* Considering the fact that I can’t watch anything on Cruncyroll (THANKS, GEO-BLOCKING!!!), this post is making me jealous, but oh well. I’ll stick with my older animes πŸ˜€ 90s animes were the best, so woot for that! Reminds me, I should really watch my new Sailor Moon DVDs! ^^

I think it’s cute that you found some Anime that your husband would watch with you! Between me and my boyfriend, he’s the manga/anime lover between us XD. I can’t believe that One Piece is still going on! This is the same to Naruto too (even though it’s in a different series now). Short anime are awesome because you don’t need to feel overwhelmed by 30 mins of action when you’re limited with time.

Have you watched Knights of Sidonia? I watched one season of it and somehow got hooked to it. I don’t know why it’s interesting, but it caught my attention XD.

    • Cat says:

I heard of Knights of Sidonia. I think it’s a Netflix exclusive? I haven’t tried it, but I think it’s on my queue πŸ™‚
