Project 52, part 4

Spring is here and with it comes some great weather. It also comes with a lot of rain. I was going to say it’s unfortunate, but really, Texas usually needs the rain. And of course, it picks the weekends to rain on, which are the days I’d like to go out and take photos!

The plus side of being stuck indoors is that it forces me to practice with my speedlite flash. The first photo is an outdoors one, but the rest are indoors and use an external flash for the light source.

#14 – Bluebonnets
Bluebonnets are the state flower of Texas, and when spring comes around, they pop up everywhere. And I really do mean everywhere. They’re most commonly seen all over the grass strips next to roads and highways. There was a large patch of them next to the feeder road near my house, so I walked over to take some photos. More are in this gallery!

#15 – Eat Up!
I recently got this absolutely adorable set of 10 small Kirby figures. They’re meant to be stacked on top of each other, but I took some of them and paired them with a few food figures from a RE-MENT set. I also made this photo available as a desktop wallpaper!

#16 – Making Onigiri
Onigiri are Japanese rice balls that are made with sushi rice. I like making mine with (cooked) salmon filling and a bit of seaweed. This is a photo of my set-up! The bowl in the top center is salted water to dip my hands in. The salt seasons the rice, and the water helps pack the rice together.

#17 – Hawaiian Memories
I put up a new backdrop set-up, so I wanted to test it out! These are some things I’ve collected from my past few trips to Hawaii 🙂

And here is the set-up I mentioned. I used to just tack some fabric to the wall, but I felt like I was creating too many holes. I finally bought a cheap backdrop stand for the fabric. The stand comes with more pieces to make it wider, but I don’t think it’s sturdy enough to hold large muslin or paper backdrops. It’s enough for my small set-ups though!

I think last time I said I was going to do the next recap at week 18, but I decided to do it a bit early at week 17 🙂 The next one will be in 4-5 weeks as usual!

Nice photos! I love the bluebonnets photo. So pretty!

The Kirby set up is awesome 😀 It’d have been even more awesome if you’d set your Kirby setup next to the onigiris you made in the next one!

And the Hawaiian backdrop is gorgeous. Love how you set it up, and it makes me want to go to Hawaii and get some of those stuff myself 😀

Great recaps! Can’t wait to see your next batch! ^^

Bluebonnets are simply beautiful and you’re right, they do grow directly around highways. I even had my husband stop one year before going to Dallas, to take pictures of me and bluebonnets.

    Kirby is so cute =)

You went to Hawaii? Awesome sauce!

Haha I use cheap tissue paper for my backdrop and even just printer paper if the subject is small enough. :’D I’m definitely planning on setting up a proper backdrop at our new place!

I love all your photos! The Kirby figures are so cute. I love the pictures of the bluebonnets too. I’m visiting Texas for the first time in a few weeks. I’m guessing it’ll be really hot by then?

Thanks! The weather has been pretty nice lately, so it might be ok when you’re here 🙂 It’s been in the 80sF lately.

    I really love the photos.

That is a cool tip about the backdrop. I often have trouble trying to get many objects to look okay. Often I use a white pillowcase and have to rely on a lot of natural light. Something like that would be cool, I might have to see what I can find. 😀

  • Definitely enjoyed reading through your recaps! I have seen bluebonnets in person but they’re really beautiful. Lucky for you to live near these beauties. Also that Kirby setup is adorbs!!! I love the character and how you assembled everything together. It makes a pretty desktop background, too 🙂 I love what you did to your set-up. I want to make something like that too, if only I knew how and what things to remember! 🙂

I love your photography. I wish I had a nice camera to do all of that but given my income at the moment, it’s not something I’m willing to splurge on just yet. Nice set-up by the way. I’ve been meaning to do something similar for when I start doing item reviews.

The blue bonnets are beautiful. I’ve never seen them before (maybe they don’t exist here in Seattle)? Or I may just not be familiar with the name.

I LOVE onigiri. I don’t know how to make it myself (even if it’s simple) but IT IS SO GOOOOOD.

    • Cat says:

Thanks! There’s some nice casual-level DSLRs and also high-end compacts that cost a bit less but still take great photos 🙂 It’s very possible bluebonnets don’t exist in Seattle. I think they’re a flower that only grows in the southwest? Onigiri is very easy to make if you want to try some time!

  • Uglyfish says:

I’ve never heard of bluebonnets before, they look so pretty – and so abundant too! I love all of the little Kirbies! The’re adorable, and you’ve made them look so good too!
Onigiri sounds yummy, I’ve gone really basic with food again recently so I’d like to experiment and give this a try. Your photography set up looks amazing, and based on your picture above it really works too!

Happy Spring, Cat! I wish we can have some rain in LA. I don’t remember the last time we had actual rain for a good while!

Rain is awesome because flowers just bloom right after. The bluebonnets are so pretty!! Your Kirby photoshoot is so cute!!! I love how they’re just around cute food figurines :D. I love my onigiri with cooked salmon as well! I made it a goal to make onigiri one day but I don’t have time for it D:. It’s supposed to be easy to make too!!! Do you have a recipe for cooked salmon? I’m still not satisfied with how I’m cooking salmon yet *__*.

Your photoshoot setup looks simple and does the job! I like how it doesn’t take up too much space :).

    • Cat says:

Onigiri is really easy to make! You basically salt the sushi rice and pack it together with some filling 🙂

I like to bake my salmon. I season the fish, wrap it in aluminum foil, and then bake at 400F for about 15min (until the fish is all pink). I usually season it with salt, pepper, and olive oil. I’ll also include herbs and lemon slices if I have some. It’s pretty simple but tasty 🙂

The bluebonnets are beautiful (never seen it in real life T_T) and the onigiri looks cute! those kirbies are cuties too XD your photos are so beautiful especially the bluebonnets ^^
