Game recommends – Mystery/Suspense

Time for another round of video game recommends! This is actually the theme I planned to start with, but I did the co-op duos for Valentine’s Day instead. Here are a few of my favorite games that contain mystery and/or suspense.

Professor Layton Professor Layton and the Curious Village (DS)

Sypnosis: Professor Layton and Luke are summoned to St. Mystere to solve the mystery of the Golden Apple. Anyone who solves it will inherit Baron Reinhold’s fortune, except no one has been able to so far. However, shortly after they arrive, more mysterious things happen like a murder and kidnapping, and there are strange noises coming from the large tower in town.

My thoughts: I love puzzle games, so I’m a big fan of the Professor Layton series. The very first game (this one) remains my favorite of them so far, but the rest are also worth checking out if you enjoy this type of thing. Though it’s kind of in visual novel form, all of these games are still heavily puzzle games – with brain teasers, logic puzzles, sliding puzzles, etc. What sets the Layton games apart from other puzzle games is that there is actually an interesting story with likable characters.

How I decide on cosplays

Joy asked me how I determine which costumes to make. She read my mind! I actually drafted an entry about it just last month! I originally wrote this because I couldn’t decide on which costume to work on next, so I began thinking back on why I chose other costumes in the past.

1. I really like the game/show/movie/etc.
This is really the base reason for all of my cosplays. If I don’t like what the character is from, I don’t think it’s worth pursuing. This reason especially applies to my Chell (Portal) and Knives (Scott Pilgrim) costumes. Their designs aren’t necessarily interesting or hard to make, but I’m obsessed with Portal, and Scott Pilgrim vs The World is one of my favorite movies.

2. It would be a fun group cosplay.
I have a few solo cosplays, but I actually prefer cosplaying in a group if possible. It’s just fun to match with your friends 🙂 Our soon-to-be Spirited Away costumes were decided when we tried to figure out what we can do together, and we realized we all like Ghibli films.
